An attempt has been made in this book Modern Indian Political Thought by the author (Dr.V.P.Varma, President of All India Political Science Association, 1968) to present a systematic picture of Modern Indian political ideas which are spread in a number of volumes, journals, newspaper files, pamphlets, etc. This book is perhaps the first comprehensive attempt to analyze and expound the various phases, aspects and schools of Modern Indian political thought.

For studying the political ideas of a thinker we think that a discussion of his basic metaphysical foundations is essential. The explication of the dominant metaphysical assumptions makes the comprehension of political ideas easier. Hence, in this book, before analyzing the details of political ideas, a study of their philosophical foundation has been usually made. The sociological foundation of political ideas has also been discussed. The Author has also tried to discuss the economic implications of political ideas. A similar comprehensive methodology has also been pursued in his other book in the field of political science.

In this edition considerable new materials have been included in the work. The political thought of Indian University teachers should find increase sign of importance in the curriculum of political science and hence, the author’s Presidential Address at the Bombay Conference of the Indian Political Science Association (1968) has been incorporated here. An original paper on the Right to Information is also being published. The synopsis of the Mookerjee Memorial Lectures delivered by the author at the Allahabad University in 1981 is also being included. Sections on Nehru’s concept of Culture, Premchand’s social and political ideas, the Methodology of Tilak and Aurobindo, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad’s leadership have been added.

The political thought of India extending from the days of the Vedas, Panini, Kadambari to the epochs of Dayananda, Tilak, Vivekananda and Gandhi is phenomenal in its significance not only for India and Asia but for the world. Ancient and Medieval Indian Political Thought and Modern Indian Political Thought constitute definite encyclopedic reference works on Indian Political Thought.

Dr. Vishwanath Prasad Varma popularly known as Dr. V. P. Varma, has got worldwide recognition as an eminent political scientist. He obtained his MA degree in Political Science from the Columbia University (1948) and Ph.D. in Political Science from the Chicago University. He also had the distinction to serve Patna University as Head of the Department of Political Science and Director of the Institute of Public Administration continuously for 22 years. His book Modern Indian Political Thought is internationally famous and is taught in the U.S.A., England and Germany. Reviewing the book “THE TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT”, London has hailed the author as an Exceptionally learned Political Philosopher. He made exposition of his writings as President of All India Political Science Association in Mumbai, Oct. 1968 in his presidential address. Through his writings he has tried to inject into the minds of students and teachers a sense of fearlessness and old values, enshrined in the ancient Indian scriptures and philosophy of political and social thinkers.
