Godaan is justifiably considered as the best work of Prem Chand. It was originally written in Urdu, but was first translated into Hindi and then in English. I had the luck to come across a good translation done by an Englishman, Gordan C. Rodarmel. I believe that this novel will be translated in a few more languages. The novel has been often described as an epic, not merely for its volume, but also for the wide spectrum of social life and philosophy, of sentiments and emotions, and of ideas and ideals it presents. It does not tell the story of a heroic figure, a king or a prince, but of an unheroic hero. Hori, whose endurance made him a real hero. He had no animus even against his tormenters, nor could his poverty turn him into a thief or a robber. The story arouses anger, pity, pathos, admiration by turn to provide a joy for over.
