The Second Sex was originally written in French as Le Deuxième Sexe in 1949 and translated in English in 1953 by H.M Parshley. The first translation was poor and in 1985 Beauvoir herself felt a need for a better translation in an interview –“I would like very much for another translation of The Second Sex to be done, one that is much more faithful; more complete and more faithful.” The publishers commissioned Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier for a new translation and in November 2009 the new translation came in enabling people worldwide to read it.
