For Graduate, Honors and Post-Graduate Classes of Indian Universities and the I.A.S., I.E.S., I.S.,C.A.& C.A.I.I.B Examinations. The author has planned the present work in such a manner as to cover the syllabi prescribed by all the Indian Universities in economic theory for the graduate and the post-graduate classes B.A, B.Com., M.A., and M.Com. The courses of study prescribed by the Public Service Commission For the State and Central Services have also been borne in mind while writing the present volume.

This, in part explains the slightly bulky size of the book. But this could not be helped in view of the comprehensive nature of the present work. The author feels that the present volume, as it stands now, leaves out nothing of importance which may be expected of graduate or post-graduate students in economic theory. Simplicity of language and lucidity of treatment are the two considerations which the author has constantly kept in mind while explaining and elaborating the various principles of Economics. The various law, theories and concepts of Economics have been explained as far as possible with the help of charts, figure and diagrams. The treatment of economic theory has been kept, as far as possible, non-technical and non-mathematical without in any way, sacrificing its substance. Latest developments in the field of economic theory have been incorporated at appropriate places in the book. A list of suggested reading has been appended at the end of each chapter for the benefit of those who wish to go in for more extensive reading. Questions and exercises carefully selected from University and Public Service Commission Examination have also been given at the end of each chapter along with brief hints. This will, it is hoped, help the candidates in giving relevant, balanced and correct answers in the examinations.

In the present revision, special emphasis has been given on deleting some unnecessary material and on introducing new topics and improving the others. Almost all the chapters have been subjected to the minutest and the almost careful revision, resulting in several changes and improvements being made here and there. The matter given under several appendices in the earlier edition has been mostly incorporated in the relevant chapters. Some new chapters have been added and some of the earlier chapters have been bifurcated for the sake of batter coverage of the matter. Some of the added topics included Engel Curve, Compensated Demand Curve, Elasticity Measures, Division of Labor, Mobility of Labor, Capital Formation, Internal and External Economics of Scale, Cost Function, Degree of Monopoly Power- Its Measures Collective Bargaining and Wage Determination. Three new chapters have been added: Forms of Market Structure, Profit Maximization and Pricing Methods, Appraising Project Profitability. Keeping in view, the recent change introduced in the pattern of question papers, short-answer questions and objective question have been given in addition to the main question at the end of each chapter.
